Voting is Now Closed!

Well, a more precise way to say that would be: "Voting Will No Longer Count!"

The widget will remain active and you can cast as many votes as you want, it's also a cool way to browse all the apps. We're still registering the votes and maybe in the future we'll post new results for fun, but for the purposes of this contest, the voting is officially closed!

Now it's time for us to crunch the numbers and we'll be back with an official announcement of winners on Thursday morning!

Voting for Truveo Developer Challenge is Now Open

Voting for the TopCoder Community Favorite category is now open and will remain open until 4pm EDT on Tuesday July 29th. At that point, all the numbers will be crunched and our 9, $10,000 first prize winners, along with the 20, $500 second prize winners will be announced on August 1st.

We have built a battle-style voting widget for the occasion, which you can see below. It is pretty self-explanatory and should give you the opportunity to browse the applications and actually try them before you vote. While you don't have to try every app, we encourage you to try to make an informed decision when voting. There are links in the widget to get more information and/or download & use every submission.

The widget randomly matches up 2 of the 96 submissions at a time, and all you have to do is choose the one you like better by clicking the "VOTE" button under the submission you choose. Two more apps will load, and you repeat the process as many times as you like. Each time you vote for an app, it gets a "win" and its opponent gets a "lose". At the end of the week, the winners will be determined according to which have the highest winning percentage.

MINOR BUG ALERT:: There is a bug that will actually cast a vote if the user clicks on the headline above a particular submission. We are working on this and it should be fixed shortly. More information on each submission can be found by following the "Link to View or Download" link under the submissions.

3...2...1... It's Over!

The submission phase for the $100,000 Truveo Developer Challenge is now closed!

I'd like to thank everyone who participated, we are truly amazed at the amount of great submissions we've received.

The contest ends with a total of 96 passing submissions, nine of which will be awarded a $10,000 first prize, another 20 will earn a $500 second prize, and everyone who submitted here (even non-passing submissions) will be sent a TopCoder/Truveo T-Shirt.

We'll be spending the next week going over the numbers and judging the winners. The voting for the TopCoder Community favorite will begin tomorrow, using our new Voting Widget designed specifically for this contest. The widget uses a "battle"-type format, which will randomly match two submissions against each other and ask the user to determine which he/she likes better.

A reminder of the scoring breakdown:

Usage (20%): Usage will be determined based on usage statistics. It is strictly prohibited to manufacture or attempt to manufacture usage in any way. Usage and activity shall be subject to audit by TopCoder and/or Truveo.
Innovation (20%): Determined by the Competition judges
Best Use of APIs (20%): Best use of the functionality provided by the Specified Technology
Truveo favorite (20%): Popularity among Truveo staff

The $100,000 Truveo Developer Challenge is coming to close with just one day remaining to submit your apps for consideration.

A reminder, the submission deadline is 2:00 p.m. EST on July 21, 2008.

Any passing submission we receive before the deadline will be eligible for prizes. You may continue to make updates and add features to your existing apps before and after the submission phase closes, but the most recent version of your submission as of the 2pm EST deadline will the one submitted for judging.

Filter out Adult Videos with "AVidBlocker"

"Did you ever land in a situation where you were searching for some decent video of interest but some abusive or adult videos got displayed in your search results? Especially, when you land in such situation when you are browsing in a public place, office, at home or when you have kids around you, it is often embarrassing.

A situation quoted here could perhaps be the worst situation one might get to see.

Though, a thorough analysis of complete video clip and filtering is a big subject that requires complex server side functionality, this application provides a simple and reliable mechanism that can keep you safe from 70-80% of identifiable evil videos."

What is AvidBlocker?

AvidBlocker helps you in safe searching by providing the following features.

-Filter Feature

Avid Blocker blocks out most of the Abusive or Adult (A) content videos. The filter mechanism relies on a mini database of A rated words and checking for the occurrence of those words in the video title or description.

-Language Independence

While filtering out the A rated videos, it operates in language independent mode. i.e. even if the video title or description is in any language, this application is capable of recognizing most of such videos and blocking them out.

Do Not Use the name Truveo in your application: Use "Powered by Truveo" instead

Dear TopCoder Community:

I need to bring up a very important point that will impact all of you of have used the name Truveo in your application.

When it comes time to review and rank your application, and finally award the $100,000 in prize money, you need to know that "THE NAME OF YOUR APPLICATION SHOULD NOT CONTAIN THE WORD TRUVEO BECAUSE THAT INDICATES INACCURATELY THAT TRUVEO ENDORSES YOUR APPLICATION. THIS IS IN VIOLATION OF THE LICENSE AND CONTEST RULES."

As mentioned in a previous blog post, attribution is one of the requirements when it comes to removing the daily query limit. For those of you who have used the name Truveo anywhere in your application, my recommendation would be to simply replace the name Truveo with our standard "Powered by Truveo" Logo as described here:

Integrate Video Sharing & AIM with "TrueIM"

Usage

Usage is fairly straightforward.
To perform a search, simply complete the necessary fields (toggle advanced options if you wish to include advanced filters).

Search results are displayed in the browser to the left of the window.
You can click on any video thumbnail in there to start playing it in a new window.

In the player window, you can choose to share the video with one or more friends, if they have the plug-in installed.

Also, you may view the latest videos watched by your friends, by hovering of their name in the buddy list, and a tooltip will appear, displaying them as thumbnails (clicking on them will start playing them).

If you wish to keep your history private from other users, simply indicate so in the settings menu.

New features will be added upon request.

Requirements

This plug-in has been tested on Windows XP and Windows Vista, it requires Microsoft.NET Framework v2.0+. You may download the .NET framework from the Microsoft download site.

more detailed attributes for videos, that appear as tooltips when hovering the thumbnail

- added clipboard detection - when your clipboard contents are changed, the application will perform a search using them
- added baloon tips on minimization - if you minimize the application, notifications for new videos will be shown in a tooltip in your system tray
- added Truvification option - basically what it does is you can select some paths on your HDD and it will gather the album, artist and song name information and perform searches on Truveo, and then add those to your notify list.

Usage

Usage is fairly straightforward.
To perform a search, simply complete the necessary fields (toggle advanced options if you wish to include advanced filters).

Afterwards, if you'd like to receive periodical alerts on a certain search, simply complete the fields for adding it to the notify list, and the search will be scheduled for updates according to the interval you specify.

Whenever new videos that match your criteria are found, you will be prompted and a sound may be played (according to your preferences).

You may click on either the update list box to see the videos for a specific update, or on the notifies list box to see all of the results that have been found for your search over time. They will be displayed as thumbnails in the browser to the left of the window.
You can click on any video in there to start playing it in a new window.

Videos may be bookmarked for later view. Categories for bookmarks are managed through the Bookmarks tab.
Additionally, you may submit comments and rate your favorite videos while watching them.

New features will be added upon request.

sb99: Till sometime back, I was confident that I knew (or at-least have heard) about almost all the famous tourism destinations in my country. Hello Truveo Developer Challenge Participants,

First of all: Truveo launched its new website last week; check out www.truveo.com! The site features one-click viewing for many videos, improved display of related videos, expanded and easier video sharing, social ratings, new cleaner and sharper look & feel and premium advertising.

This first blog entry highlights Facebook applications, in particular, what we at Truveo believe would constitute a great application. In the past months, the number of Facebook applications has grown exponentionally, and it has become hard to see the forest through the trees. Hence, for a Facebook application to be successful, it has to stand out from the rest by showing an innovating design and offering unique funtionality.

Specifically, let's talk about a possible Truveo FB application. To avoid a cluttered Facebook profile it is important to design a minimalistic appearance of the application on the profile page. Search queries can be entered in a search box, and the Truveo logo needs to be prominent - maybe include the Truveo logo on the search button?

Next, the search results are orderly displayed on the canvas page, which ideally hosts some Truveo house art linking to Truveo.com, to drive traffic.

One ingredient is missing from this recipe: creativity. It's one thing to outline some of the features of a successful application, it's another thing to implement it in such away that it attracts attention on the www. That's why we launched the Truveo Developer Challenge!

International Applications Anyone?

Did you know that most of the search traffic going against the Truveo API comes from outside of the United States?
That's right, over 2/3 of our traffic in fact!

And this community should know as you represent many countries.

In fact, when you look at the applications that have been submitted for this Truveo TopCoder challenge, you will notice that the Philippines is the leading country, followed by Argentina, India, Columbia, Poland, the United States, Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa ...

Since traffic is a key criteria, you may want to consider an international version of your existing application. The only requirements in term of language is that you submit documentation in English. (The application itself does not need to be in English.)

We'd like to strongly encourage you to start coding and distributing International versions of these applications, or write new ones that are more targeted for the local markets that you know so well.

TRUVEO: 10,000 daily query limit. What can you do about it?

Greetings:

As you start distributing your applications, widget, gadgets, Web sites to a wider audience, you are starting to enjoy an increase in traffic: Congratulations!
But you are also most likely aware of the fact that every app_id is limited to 10K queries per day by default.

So what can you do about it? Very simple:

We will increase the query limit on your API Account as necessary under the following conditions:

(1) your site must comply with our acceptable use guidelines; see http://developer.truveo.com/APITerms.php

(2) you must include 'powered by Truveo' attribution on your site; see http://developer.truveo.com/TruveoTerms.php Also note that the logo should be clickable and should point to www.truveo.com (or to the local version of truveo.com if you are not located in the United States, so for instance if you/your users are in Spain, the logo should redirect the users to es.truveo.com)
If you expose a search bar that goes against the truveo index, you should also place a 'Powered by Truveo' Logo next to that search bar.

(3) you must provide phone and email for technical and business contacts (you can update your API Account information yourself).

You can then send me an email, and we will then do a final review and increase the limit.

Introduction:

With ITVPlayer you can find videos in the internet, play them, and save your
favorite ones.

Requirements:
- Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0
- Internet connection.

Description:

1. Here you can type your query. All possible modifiers will be described later. For
instance if you what to find videos that contains word "madonna", you simply write
madonna and press Return on your keyboard or press the Make query button. If
you want to find exact phrase you have to surround the search query with quotes:
"madonna". After making a query progress bar will occur on the top of the window
showing how is going progress with searching for videos that match given criterion.

2. Here are all possible modifiers for your query. To know how will they effect your
searching just put your mouse cursor over the text box and adequate tool tip will
appear. If you want to clear all the modifiers in the tab press Clear all button.

3. This is where all found videos will appear. The number of shown results depends on
user settings (it can be changed in settings window, which can be activated by
pressing Settings button). After clicking on the video, more precise informations
about it will appear in Video info tab.

4. ITVPlayer can also search for related items (Settings window). They are divided into
four groups: channel, tags, category and user. By double clicking on related item it
will be placed in modifiers group and used for next query.

5. Video info tab is place where you can look at the all found informations about given
video. To play that video press Play button. If you want to add video to your
favorites database just press Add to favorites button. Also if you want to remove
press Remove from favorites.

6. Here is where you can manage your favorites videos. If you double click on item it
will be placed in Video info tab. You can also select multiple videos and remove
them by pressing Remove button or remove them all.

1.News channels: In this area, you'll have a series of links what will enable you to retrieve news and videos related with the AOL news channel that previously select.

2.Search a topic: Entering your keywords and clicking in the "Search button", you'll receive news and videos based on your keywords.

3.Results area: In this area, you can check the news based on your keywords or link chosen, and videos related with that news. If you click in the headline, a new window will open the source of the news, and if you click in the image of the video, a new window will open the source of the video.

4.Related videos: In this area, you'll find videos related with all the retrieved news and keywords that entered.
